19-year-old Latvian Jelena Ostapenko in the first set of the match against an experienced Caroline Wozniacki has conceded with the account 0:5, but nearly saved the party. "I think maybe this [birthday] is one of the best ones - because to play semifinal of Roland Garros on your birthday, I think it's really nice".
The 19-year-old bounced back from some sloppy play in the first set and dealt with the rain delays far better than her more experienced opponent.
Thursday is the birthday of upset winners Timea Bacsinszky and Jelena Ostapenko, who will face each other in the French Open semifinals that afternoon.
One Frenchwoman however does remain in the draw: The player Mladenovic won the doubles title with previous year in Paris, Caroline Garcia, who will play second-seed Karolina Pliskova in Wednesday's quarterfinals.
Both Bacsiszky and Ostapenko share the same birthday but, while one turns 28, the other only reaches the age of 20.
"Being aggressive is my style of game and I was just trying to play aggressive today", Ostapenko said after the match.
Earlier Latvia's Ostapenko booked her spot with a 7-6 (7-4) 3-6 6-3 win over Swiss Timea Bacsinszky in a battle of the birthday girls.

Eleventh seed Wozniacki's wait for a first grand slam continues on after she was dumped out six hours after the quarter-final started as poor weather led to one lengthy delay at the end of the second set and another soon after the players had resumed. This is the first Grand Slam tournament since the 1979 Australian Open that none of the eight women's quarterfinalists had won a major title. She finished a total of three aces and 25 winners, nine more than her French opponent. In the sixth game, Ostapenko blasted a backhand that Wozniacki could barely get her racket on and it was now 4-2.
"I feel extremely privileged to be in a second semi-final at Roland Garros", said Bacsinszky, who lost to Serena Williams in the semi-finals two years ago.
Bacsinszky (27), the world number 31, had opened up a 2-0 and then 4-2 lead in the first set, only for Mladenovic to respond each time before closing out the set in 63 minutes with an ace.
Having trailed 5-0 in the first set, Ostapenko rallied to 5-4 before losing the set 6-4.
Braving those trials with a strong mind and fast feet, Bacsinszky beat back Kristina Mladenovic, 6-4, 6-4, bursting into the Roland Garros semifinals for the second time in the last three years. When I came here I didn't expect to be in the semis, but I'm playing better and better every match.
She faced in Timea Bacsinszky, however, another woman with an emotional back story, the kind of artistic game beloved of the French crowds, and from the French-speaking region of Switzerland. She kept the momentum and it Wozkiacki looked nearly relived when torrential rain lashed the court causing a three-hour delay.
